The Chronomat began design in 1940, with the original release as the reference number 769 in 1942. After several design changes over the next four decades, Breitling re-released the Chronomat with the rouleaux bracelet beginning in 1984, in honor of the company’s 100th anniversary.
This vintage Breitling Chronomat, reference number D13050.1, is ready, whether at a power lunch or a night on the town! Truly an exclusive play on your wrist, this blast from the past is fully functional, and classically good looking, without being ostentatious.
The highly polished 18k & stainless steel exterior provides a stylish retro vibe. A white main dial, polished gold hands, large date window at 3 o’clock, and bright lume on the indices and hands make the watch easy to read in most lighting conditions. Chronograph features include golden subdials, with concentric circle engravings, and elapsed time marked by blued steel hands. The white rehaut includes a tachymetre and 1/100 markings.
Rouleaux – French, from Old French rolel, is a noun meaning a small roll, often referring to a roll of coins. Also called the “bullet” bracelet, due to it’s visual similarity to linked ammunition for belt-fed machine guns, either nickname is an excellent descriptor for the bracelet. This bracelet is two-tone, stainless steel with yellow gold highlights, and features a hidden butterfly clasp for secure closure; the clasp opening is marked with the company name. It currently fits an 8” wrist; I have the “average” 7.5” wrist, and it is slightly too large on me. Your jeweler should be able to adjust to fit your wrist easily, and directions are included in the manual.
Double boxed, with manual, hang tag, and service papers showing the repairs done at the Breitling factory. I purchased it from the original owner, who indicated he had never had it serviced. It was keeping decent time, but very difficult to set, as the hands would only move backward, while the date would only move forward, and the crown tried to come of out the movement when winding the crown to move the hands back. The crystal had much of the AR missing, and numerous scratches, while case, bezel, and bracelet all had many scratches and scrapes. Though a decent looking watch given it’s age, I believed it was worth the service cost for a return to it’s former glory.
During the time at the Breitling Service Center, the watch received a new crystal, new dial and subdials, new golden main hands, new blued subdial hands, new crown, thorough cleaning, complete lubrication, and expert polish. The watch is now in excellent condition, with only minor wear marks which could not be removed without compromising the quality or appearance of the watch. Since returning from Breitling, it has been gently worn only twice, by me, to confirm proper timekeeping and complete functional operation. Though approximately 25 years old, this is about as close as you can get to “new vintage”. Photos accurately reflect the condition of the watch, and are considered part of the item description.
WHY WORK WITH ME?
