Rolex is a Swiss watch company founded in 1905 by Hans Wilsdorf. Originally called Wilsdorf and Davis, Rolex specializes in luxury timepieces and has been the leader of the industry for years. Rolex watches are famous worldwide, with some models selling for over $10,000 per piece. In this blog post we will cover Rolex history, types of Rolex watches, and trends within their products.

Rolex History

Rolex has a long and rich history. Its founder, Hans Wilsdorf, first began selling timepieces in 1878 when he opened his own shop in London called “Hans Wilsdorf & Sons” at the age of 15. His company became popular for its high-quality watches as well as their reliability and accuracy. Reading analog watches was a skill people did not always have because they did not have digital displays like today’s wristwatches. In 1905, Mr. Wilsdorf registered the name Rolex with French authorities due to an increase in counterfeiting within the industry and was later granted copyright protection on it by way of patenting certain parts including crowns, cases, dials etc.

Rolex started creating watches with automatic, or self-winding, movements since 1926. The self-winding complication was in demand since customers did not want to wind their wrist watch every morning. The end result was a more precise timepiece, a timepiece that would need adjusting once per year on average since the movement was manufactured to demanding tolerances. In 1945 Rolex introduced two new models. These models were called the Oyster Perpetual, and the Datejust. The former completed the tests to be labeled a chronometer, the later came with a date display. This Oyster Perpetual was considered Rolex’s best watch, a symbol of luxury and upper class.

Soon after the introduction of these pieces, Rolex introduced the Submariner. This line of watches would become the Rolex signature, and the most popular watch on the wrist of people everywhere. The 1950s brought the world the GMT-Master for pilots and navigators needing an extra hour hand to read two time zones at once. This allowed pilots and captains to track their destination time, as well as their home timezone.

In 1963, Rolex introduced one of the most famous watches in the world, the Cosmograph Daytona. Rolex named this watch after the famous car race in Florida, a race Rolex sponsored from 1962 to 2008 (Rolex now sponsors Formula 1 instead). This is a start of new designs over the years to keep up with changing trends.

One thing Rolex did to help with it’s marketing campaign was product placement. The world loves a movie, and you can be sure, Rolex placed watches on some of the biggest icons. The most famous would be the Submariner on the wrist of James Bond. Other classic movie watches include the Day-Date on such wrists as Alec Baldwin in Glengarry Glen Ross and James Gandolfini in The Sopranos. One mustn’t forget the Datejust on Christian Bale’s wrist in American Psycho.

Rolex has a long history of innovations and is constantly looking for ways to improve their watches, as well as recently releasing two new models: the Rolex Datejust II (2011) and the Rolex Sky-Dweller (2012).

Rolex Submariner

Rolex designed the Submariner in 1953, and it is one of their most iconic watches. The model features a unidirectional rotating bezel for measuring elapsed time with a luminous marker at the 12 o’clock position.

Rolex Oyster Perpetual

The Oyster Perpetual is an entry-level Rolex watch that first came out in 1926. This type of rolex watch is still around today and has gone through a few different variations over the years, including five lines which include the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Datejust, Rolex Oyster Perpetual Day/Date, and the Rolex Oysterdate Precision which was manual wind, but for many, still a great timepiece.

Rolex Trends

In recent years, Rolex has expanded its focus to include new models that cater to modern styles such as sporty designs like the Oyster Perpetual Sea Dweller Deepsea (launched in 2013) or their newest release, the Milgauss Watch (released 2014). With these newer releases they are trying to capture more of an adventurist market.

Rolex Movements

All Rolexes are self-winding with the exception of a few models, such as the diving watch Sea Dweller Deepsea (which needs to be manually wound).

The watch brand became very popular, and thanks to their marketing efforts, Rolex was a household name and a symbol of success. They began to create watches specifically for people in high-risk professions such as doctors, oil rig workers (the first Rolex Submariner), pilots and those who travel the world.

Their marketing efforts also helped to create the idea of an “ideal Rolex owner”. This person was a white male between 18 and 35, wealthy but not ostentatious, conservative but with good taste in high-end luxury items.

The company had always targeted males for their advertisements, even though they knew that females were purchasing more watches than before; it wasn’t until 2000 when they changed their strategy and started creating advertising campaigns targeting women as well.

Rolexes are usually priced higher because of how long they last (they have a lifetime guarantee). They also use top-quality materials such as steel or gold alloys which can make them very heavy.

Currently, there are several Rolex models, but the most popular ones are made from steel and gold.

You can find many different types of rolex on this website. You can buy them online or purchase one from your local retailer.

Rolexes are available at various prices depending on what style you’re looking for; they range anywhere from $6,000-$32,000+. The most popular styles right now are the sport models.

In today’s world, it seems like everybody has something to say about rolex watches in one form or another. Some people swear by them while others are just confused as to why someone would spend so much money on such an accessory. The truth is that even though they’re not for everyone, there are valid reasons why these luxury timepieces have been around since the very beginning of wristwatch manufacture. It might be hard to believe now with all the different styles available but back when their creation first started the only type of watch was called The Oyster Perpetual.
