One could argue that this particular Rolex Daytona is the “Summer Paul Newman”, given the summery vibes coming off the two-tone bracelet and case. The gold bezel and middle bracelet link give a sunny look to an already incredible watch. If this is your first Daytona, it’s a great one. In 2000 Rolex began phasing out the 4030 movement in favor of the new Rolex Calibre 4130, which was their first in-house Daytona movement. Previously, Daytonas were mated to the the Rolex 4030 which is a heavily modified Zenith El Primero movement. In an industry where complications are prized, complexity is not. With the new Rolex Calibre 4130, Rolex sought to wrangle the complexity of its predecessor to create a highly serviceable and more stable movement. And it worked: the service costs on the 4130 are less than its older sibling, there are fewer parts to source, and the quality is spectacular (or, superlative, as the Crown might say). The 4130 is rated between -2/+2. Rolex Calibre 4130 also introduced ceramic ball bearings in the rotor to give greater winding efficiency and reduce need for service. And that’s not the only thing they shored up with 4130 — a Parachrom hairspring debuted in the calibre to give increased shock resistance and greater tension, increasing the power reserve. Specs: Movement: Scope of Delivery: This piece is 100% guaranteed authentic. Bracelet has 11 links and comfortably fits a 7” wrist. Polished, bracelet has no stretch. The bezel has normal wear (no big indentations) but the paint inside the tachymètre numerals is faded a bit on some, most noticeably by the 1 o’clock marker. There is a chip in the edge of the sapphire by the 8 o’clock that can be observed in the photos, but it is small and looks worse in pictures than it does in real life. Case has been polished and cleaned, and is extremely lustrous and smooth. |
